TomTom Bandit
Action Camera

TomTom set out to enter the action camera market with a product built not just for capturing adrenaline-fueled moments, but for making it easy to relive and share those moments without technical barriers. Competing with established brands like GoPro, the Bandit was designed as an all-in-one solution for capturing, editing, and sharing high-quality action footage, especially for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

FOCAL POINTS

As the Lead Visual Designer, I translated the product vision into a cohesive, user-centered digital experience guided by six core focal points:

SEAMLESS EXPERIENCE
BEST-IN-CLASS VIDEO
EASE OF USE
RELIVE
SHOW THE WORLD
YOUR PERFORMANCE

BUSINESS GOAL

The objective was to create a distinctive action camera experience that simplified video capture and editing, encouraged social sharing and performance tracking, and expanded TomTom’s presence in lifestyle and sports technology. Success was measured by product adoption, app engagement, and market differentiation.

SCOPE

This project focused exclusively on the digital experience layer of the TomTom Bandit ecosystem — including the camera interface, companion mobile app, and real-time video overlays. Hardware design and physical product development were outside my scope.

MY CONTRIBUTION

As Lead Visual Designer, I defined the visual identity across all digital touchpoints. Key contributions included:

  • Designing a clear, intuitive camera UI optimized for fast interactions

  • Leading the design of the companion app with playful, data-driven visualizations and easy editing workflows across devices

  • Creating a signature icon system for highlighting key moments like jumps and acceleration

  • Developing modular real-time overlays to visualize performance metrics and enhance storytelling

This work enabled users to capture, relive, and share their best moments with emotional impact and clarity.

SEAMLESS EXPERIENCE

Bandit's camera interface

I designed the Bandit's camera interface to prioritize quick access and minimal effort during use. A clear, distraction-free layout designed around the Bandit’s four-way control button, enabling quick, gloved interactions through simple menus.

Companion app

To support a frictionless content creation journey, I designed the companion app across mobile, tablet, and desktop platforms — ensuring users could access the same editing flow regardless of device. This cross-platform approach was key to delivering a seamless experience across multiple touchpoints. Users were able to quickly edit hours of footage without downloading it first, significantly lowering the barrier to sharing content.

DESIGNING VISUAL CUES FOR ACTION HIGHLIGHTS

To support the Relive, Show the World, and Your Performance focal points, I designed a set of signature icons for the Highlights feature — enabling users to instantly recognize peak moments like jumps, stunts, and speed bursts within the video timeline. This made it effortless to identify, revisit, and share the most exciting parts of an adventure.

RELIVE

Crafting a visual language for instant storytelling

In designing the storytelling flow, my goal was to ensure users could quickly and effortlessly transform their footage into shareable stories, directly from the camera to the app.

I focused on creating a visual experience that was seamless, emotionally engaging, and fast, allowing users to easily compile highlights, apply dynamic overlays, and share their videos within seconds. This approach not only encouraged users to show the world their experiences but also helped them relive their most exciting moments with ease.

YOUR PERFORMANCE

Modular overlays to amplify performance

To enhance how users experienced their activity data, I designed a set of modular real-time overlays that brought excitement and clarity to action footage.

The goal was to support users in pushing their performance further by visualizing key metrics like speed, acceleration, G-force, and elevation in a way that was both impactful and easy to understand. Each overlay used a consistent structure — a vibrant, colorful base layered over a contrasting background — to ensure legibility across fast-paced, high-contrast video.

SPEEDY DEVIL

One example is a circular speed gauge that dynamically filled with motion, using the same modular design logic applied across different metrics. This consistency allowed for scalability while keeping the experience visually cohesive.
