TomTom Golf GPS Watch

TomTom aimed to expand its footprint in the sports wearable market with a focus on golf — a sport where data-driven decisions can dramatically impact performance. The TomTom Golf GPS Watch was conceived to cater to both beginners and intermediate players by delivering contextual insights during play, ultimately helping users play smarter, more strategic rounds.

BUSINESS GOAL

The core business objectives were to:

  • Make golf more accessible to new players through intuitive digital tools.
  • Help intermediate players make smarter, real-time decisions to improve performance.
  • Reinforce TomTom’s brand as a provider of intelligent, decision-enabling products.
  • Increase adoption and retention through an integrated wearable and app ecosystem.

MY CONTRIBUTION

I led the end-to-end user interface design for both the watch and its companion app, with a focus on clarity, speed, and usability in outdoor conditions. My involvement focused exclusively on the digital experience layer, hardware development and sensor innovation were outside my scope.

A STREAMLINED WATCH UI

A key part of my role was translating complex golf course information into intuitive, glanceable visuals on a low-resolution monochrome screen.

Designed a texture-based visual language to distinguish course elements on a monochrome display for clear visibility in bright outdoor conditions.

Mapping critical data like green distances and hazard locations in a way that could be easily interpreted mid-round.

Creating simplified yet rich green view layouts to help players understand approach angles and pin placements.

COMPANION APP DESIGN

Post-game Analysis

As an extension of the watch experience, the TomTom Golfer App was designed to help players reflect on their performance, recognize patterns, and improve over time. My focus was on making post-round data both insightful and enjoyable to explore. This meant combining realistic map visuals with engaging, golf-specific data displays — all wrapped in a visual language that was clean, intuitive, and consistent with the brand.

SCORECARD

I designed an interactive digital scorecard that broke down each round into key performance areas using custom iconography and visual cues tailored to golf. Circles and squares were used to simplify stroke tracking and scoring outcomes, while the layout was optimized for quick scanning across holes.

ULTIMATE ROUND

The "Ultimate Round" feature combined historical data from multiple rounds to generate a player's best possible performance on a given course. I created a visual format that felt aspirational yet grounded, using gold-accented styling and realistic map overlays to emphasize achievement.
